More video of airplanes (and a helicopter) struggling with the ridiculous crosswinds from storm Ciara. These pilots earned their money on this day.

Here in America we have this thing called crosswind runways which mostly eliminates these videos.

Shame on us for stifling YouTube economic growth!

A lot less room in Europe to build all the runways. Austin doesn’t have any xwind runways, but our winds are out of the south about 90% of the year.

Yes, my tongue was firmly in cheek of course - land is at a premium there. But it still amazes me that not even Heathrow has a crosswind runway.

Then again, here in Chicago, both strong SW and NW winds are fairly common, depending on the season.

We can’t all be Midway....

I find it fascinating to look at old airports, or the visible remains of old airports at modern airports, to see the old triangular layout of the runways. You can even see it at O’Hare.

This is an interesting site if you’re looking for something to waste some time with:

At 5:30, that guy  gets any dinner he  wants in the terminal.

Ha Midway has its own issues, thanks to short runways and airspace problems caused by nearby airports and, um, the Sears Tower (fun fact - the Sears Tower is *on* the extended centerline of runway 4/22).

I’ve seen that site before - probably from a link you sent.  Amazing how many airports were in and around Chicago back in the day - including a couple that were nearly on O’Hares property.

The crew at 6:15 nailed it too.

Crabbing is fun! Really!

Yeah, I did my flying lessons at a single runway airport, so you just had to deal with any crosswinds.

Probably not 58 mph gusts, though.

I’m kind of surprised he stuck with it. He looked almost 45º off center line.

Yeah, that was really well done.

This is my fireplace. My surf braking over the rocks . I could watch these forever. Birmingham is pretty odd with the hill in the middle of it’s main runway. That one 737 [@4:30]had rubber on the runway but the ski jump boosted him into the blue again. It seems the guys that really struggle are the ATR/Dash turboprops [the Are Lingus at the beginning]. They have high  wings riding ground effect and that tall tail weathercocking  into the wind.

Certainly not in a Cessna 152 anyway.

I’d be interested to know just how big and how far apart those humps are. The telephoto really squeezes it all together. But yeah, I could watch this stuff for hours. Here’s another one, from Amsterdam, in amazing 4K.

Yea, me too. After they showed a few bails, I was expecting it again, then he set her down. Crazy.

UK needs to invest in aerodromes.

also they need a new survery crew, to flaten that out
